The Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s leading tourist attractions. Located at the southern tip of the African continent and the meeting place of the Indian and Atlantic oceans, the Aquarium is ideally positioned to showcase the diversity of marine life found in these two seas.
In the summer of 2015, the Aquarium approached RHI to design and install a custom-manufactured stretch tent for an area that extends from its first-floor classroom facilities onto a balcony. A stretch tent was the perfect solution to fulfill all their requirements, and two years down the line, the Aquarium approached RHI do design and install its second custom structure.
This time around we were briefed to design a solution for the Aquarium’s entrance; one that would provide shade against the sun, rain and wind for queuing patrons.
Working closely with Access and Rigging Services; RHIs specialist custom installation partner; we put our heads together to come up with a design for this tricky area. And because our innovative stretch fabric is the first of its kind, manufactured in-house to exacting standards, we’re able to offer a kind of bespoke cover solution that other shading providers aren’t. This project perfectly highlights stretch tents‘ unique adaptability.

Every step of the process was approached with care and precision: From conceptual 3D rendering, manufacturing and installation (which had to take place at night so as not to interrupt the steady flow of visitors to this popular tourist attraction). Considering the complexity of this space and the challenges we faced with rigid lines and “must hit” connecting points, this project is a testament to the expert ability of RHIs custom tent division. All in all, the result speaks for itself. Or as the client put it: “exceeded all expectations”.
